A 58-year-old man from India was brought to a hospital in the city of Bagalkot because of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. The hospital doctors found in an x-ray study some foreign objects inside the patient’s stomach.
The man identified as Dyamappa Harijan is a resident of the town of Lingsugur in Raichur district. Harijan had swallowed coins of various denominations weighing a total of 1.5 kilograms over a period of two to three months, said doctor Eshwar Kalaburgi.
What are the foreign objects that the doctors found in the patient’s stomach?
According to local media, Harijan had swallowed coins of various denominations weighing a total of 1.5 kilograms over a period of two to three months, the doctor said. After the doctors performed an endoscopy and an x-ray study, the health personnel identified that they were 187 coins of different denominations, 56 five-rupee coins, 51 two-rupee coins and 80 one-rupee coins.
“He suffered from a psychiatric problem. He had been swallowing these coins for the last two or three months. He went to the hospital complaining of vomiting and abdominal discomfort. Based on his symptoms, we did an X-ray and an endoscopy and found coins in his stomach. So, we decided to operate on him,” said Dr. Eshwar Kalaburgi.
The doctor said that while the surgery was not difficult to perform, the task was to get all the coins out of his stomach.
“The stomach was enormously distended… many coins were stuck in different places in the stomach. After two hours of surgery, we recovered all the coins. After the operation, he was treated for water deficiency and other minor problems. The patient is stable and speaking as of now,” said Dr. Kalaburgi.
