Why is Doctor’s Day commemorated in Mexico every October 23?
It was in 1937 when the federal authorities named the October 23 as Doctor’s Day in Mexico. The reason is so that the date coincides with the creation of the Establishment of Medical Sciences carried out in 1833, antecedent of the current Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The Health Secretary (SSa) mentions that it was thanks to the closure of the then National and Pontifical University and the School of Surgery by decree of the then President Valentin Gomez Fariasthat the creation of said Establishment merged the medical and surgical careers in our country.

On the other hand, despite the fact that Doctor’s Day in Mexico is a celebration that has been around for decades, it had never been legally recognized. It was not until 2020 when the decree that makes this holiday official was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).
