- Home remedies arose hundreds of years ago when Medicine was not yet formally established.
- Supposed “natural” solutions against headaches generate discomfort among doctors.
- In Mexico alone, it is estimated that 8 out of 10 people have resorted to self-medication at least once in their lives.
Social networks are so popular that almost everyone uses them for different purposes. Some use them as a form of entertainment but there are also others who trust everything they read on the internet. With this in mind, Lack of regulation makes posts about home remedies so dangerous.
Today’s most popular form of communication
In the first instance, the investigation The Global State of Digitalproduced by Hootsuite and We Are Social, states that 3.4 billion people are adept at this form of interaction. The increase in connectivity and the digital age has caused it to even be a medium with greater power than traditional ones such as television.
For its part, one of the biggest problems is that digital media are flooded with fake news (false news). On many occasions they are the origin of rumors that thousands of people assume as true. In some cases, measures have been taken to combat this adversity, but there is still a pending item.
In this case it is home remedies. This type of healing arose hundreds of years ago when Medicine did not exist professionally. For generations they have prevailed for supposedly being the solution to various diseases.
Among those who defend the Alternative medicine is claimed to be a way to avoid the use of chemicals. Although that part is true, the main problem is the lack of scientific evidence that demonstrates its correct operation. In fact, many times they are placebos that only generate a false sense of security.
Fake healing methods flood the internet
This type of content is especially abundant in TikTok. Although many times those who publish home remedies do not have bad intentions, in the end they do cause harm by disseminating this type of content. As a clear example the cook @alacocinaconjacobina posted a video with a “natural” headache solution.
@alacocinaconjacobina to the kitchen with jacobina #tipdecocinaconjacobina #tipdecocinabuenisimo #headache #Health #migraine #Home remedy #home remedies #lemon #salt and lemon #Salt
On the surface it seems harmless content but when thoroughly analyzed it is not. A common ailment like a headache can have many origins. It can be anything from a symptom of a common cold to some type of cancer.
Due to the above, although it seems something minimal, it should not really be underestimated and the right thing to do is always go to a health professional. Through a general review, it can be identify the source of the problem and offer a science-based solution.
However, another of the greatest adversities that must be eliminated in our country is the self medication. Sometimes to save time people consume drugs on their own initiative. It is a failure that leads to more serious diseases or relapses that may be worse than the initial problem.
Given this scenario, several doctors have pointed out that home remedies should be considered fake news because they are apocryphal and unsupported solutions. Therefore, this type of content should be removed from social networks to prevent more people from falling for these types of scams.
