A Michigan doctor reported missing last Thursday, December 22, as a polar vortex formed over the nearby Great Lakes, was found dead under the ice of a frozen pond, five days after going missing near his home.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, temperatures in Jackson County rapidly dropped to 20 degrees Fahrenheit over the course of about two hours. The days that followed saw even cooler temperatures, dropping as low as -2 degrees Fahrenheit.
Friends and family had not heard from Payan since that Thursday when he left the hospital. According to local sources, before going to work, Payan left her dogs at the house of her friend Nicole Keizer who planned to pick them up that afternoon at 6:30 pm, but never showed up.
He was reported missing shortly after. After he was reported missing, detectives discovered security camera footage from Payan’s home, showing the doctor leaving in the middle of the afternoon on December 22.
Police searched the rest of Payan’s home with K-9 units and drones, but could find no sign of the doctor.. Instead, they decided to focus their efforts on a frozen pond on the property.
The Blackman-Leoni Public Safety (BLDPS) group confirmed that divers recovered the body of Dr. Bolek Payan “from a pond on property near his residence” around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“After finding nothing on land, holes were opened yesterday in the ice of a pond on the property and divers located the body of Dr. Payan under the ice today,” the BLDPS said in a post on its Facebook account.
