Mexican cuisine is one of the most varied and respected in the world. It is distinguished by the versatility of dishes created for all types of palates. Although within the options there is one that stands out for its popularity. It’s about the tacos and for decades it has been said that they are not healthy, but is it really true?
Origin of this simple and popular dish
According to historians, this food arose in the prehispanic era. Since before the arrival of the Spaniards, food was already used in folded tortillas. They are usually made from corn because it is one of the most abundant and cheapest foods in Mexico.
Initially, the tortillas were filled with guacamole, beans or insects but over the years the recipe has been modified. Now virtually any type of protein is used to create tacos, from al pastor to carnitas.
For its part, the greatest example of the popularity of this type of food can be seen in the number of taquerias that abound throughout the national territory. There is one on any corner and they range from street stalls to prestigious restaurants that offer this dish on their menu. Although the main difference is the price, in the end it is the same dish.
Are tacos healthy?
To answer this question the Dr Carlos Guerrero, better known on social networks as “Polo Guerrero”, made a video on the subject. The most interesting thing is that he focused on analyzing each of the elements of a conventional cue to offer a specific answer.
Firstly, it mentions that the corn tortilla contains calcium and fiber. With this in mind, it helps strengthen bones and aids digestion. Up to this point it is a good feeding option.
Regarding the filling, he affirms that any type of meat is ideal. Both chicken, beef or fish contain high doses of protein. Although the most important thing is that it should always be accompanied by herbs and vegetables such as onion and cilantro. Both are rich in vitamin B and complex B. If lemon is added, then vitamin C is also fulfilled.
For all of the above, the doctor concludes that tacos are healthy. Although there are two notes that he emphasizes and they are the ones that make the difference: preparation and quantity.

The types of tacos that do hurt
In that sense, the doctor mentions that the ideal is do not use fried tortillas because the oil is the one that is most harmful to health. While the other aspect is always consuming only a small number of tacos.
With this in mind, it is not the same to consume three or ten tacos. If the amount is too large then all the benefits mentioned are reversed and the dish becomes counterproductive. In addition to the risk of gastrointestinal diseases, obesity is also promoted.
