The releases of games like God of War Ragnarok and Starfield feel far away, like they should be here already. Like they’re late. This feeling intensifies much more when we talk about Skull and Bones, a naval battle game that aims to perfect what was seen in Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag.
After a development that we know has been tortuous, Ubisoft has announced a new pirate event that will probably show new details and reveal its release date. Finally!
Many of us are waiting for this new release from Ubisoft and we must play something similar to make the wait more enjoyable. For this reason, in this publication I propose eight games to play before the launch of Skull and Bones.
Sea of Thieves
We will agree that Sea of Thieves is currently the king of sea battles. Despite the fact that it did not have a launch very far, its arrival on Xbox and PC Game Pass triggered its fame as if it were a cannon ball.
Currently, it is one of the video games service favorites and keep adding content without stopping. Embark on a solo or cooperative multiplayer adventure, choose between three ships (Sloop, Brigantine and Galleon) and discover the secrets that this sea of thieves hides.
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag
The father of Skull and Bones. Ubisoft released Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag following the success of Assassin’s Creed III’s naval combat. Put yourself in the shoes of Edward Kenwaya young pirate who assumes the role of an assassin… although he is usually more interested in pirating.
Sail the seas and pirate against the Spanish Empire and the British Empire as they fight for territory.
Assassin’s Creed III Remastered
the grandfather of Skull and Bones. Ubisoft discovered with this title that naval battles are popular and since then it has included them in most of its video games. Black Flag took them to another level. Origins and Odyssey adapted them to their time.
Put yourself in the shoes of Connor Kenway (Ratonhnhaké ton), son of Haytham Kenway and grandson of Edward Kenway (Black Flag). He fights in the American Revolutionary War, beginning a few years before the Tea Party. This adventure features sea battles, although it is not the main attraction.
Monkey Island
The Monkey Island franchise is an essential stop when it comes to pirate games. It is a very different proposal from the previous ones, but I am sure that you will enjoy it very much.
Post to recommend, The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is a special edition of the classic Monkey Islanda graphic adventure Point and Click that marked an entire generation for its humor, irony and charismatic characters such as the young pirate Guybrush Threepwood. Finally, I remind you that Return to Monkey Island has recently been announced.
Maelstrom
Are you looking for a Battle Royale of pirate ships? Maelstrom it’s a videogame free-to-play or free on Steam. The battle takes place in a sea dotted with islands. You have to defeat the players competing to win and the monster NPCs waiting for you with valuable equipment.
The official description states that you can choose between “Captain Orc, Dwarf, Human or Undead warships with tactical combat, ship-vs-ship-vs-monster. Upgrade ships and crew to become the most powerful warship!“.
Overboard
If you are looking for a retro ship game, but really retro, then Overboard on PS1 and PC is the answer to your pirate nostalgia. Released in 1997, it puts you in the shoes of a ship that must make its way through labyrinths full of enemies, traps and treasures.
The ship has different types of shots, lives and other advantages. The game received mixed reviews (average 6), but there was consensus that its visuals (especially the transparency of the water) were amazing. One last thing: watch out for their music, it’s dangerously addictive.
King of Seas
Is overboard too retro for you? Then try King of Seas, an action role-playing game set in a pirate world, a universe full of incredible characters and quests that will lead you to become king of the pirates.
King of Seas is available for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and for PC. In fact, it’s currently 60% off on Steam.
World of Warships
It’s time to cheat a bit. We talk about pirate matters, what did you expect? If you can’t wait to have sea battles and you want to fight with very hard pieces of iron, then World of Warships offers you amazing battles during World War II.
You can play cooperatively (Player Vs AI) and multiplayer (Player Vs Player). The game is available for free on PlayStation and Xbox consoles (with next-gen version) and PC.
These are my eight ship proposals for you to play while you wait for the release of the long-awaited Skull and Bones. Have I left any important off the list? Do you know another? I read you in comments.
