With this reduction, Disney Plus already has 161.8 million subscribers globally.
Netflix, with its more than 230 million subscribers, is the leading platform on the market.
In a context in which Netflix grew in users, Disney Plus, for the first time since its launch, registered a loss of subscribers, in a crisis that, apparently, is reaching the company’s streaming service.
Times, today, are different and consumer habits, in the same way, have changed considerably thanks to the digitalization era which, as is well known, had a significant boom during the most critical months of the pandemic, a fact that had an impact on a significant growth of Netflix, the leading video streaming platform in the market.
In this sense, platforms such as Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video, HBO Max, Paramount Plus, among others, were placed among the preferences of the users.
In Mexico, at the end of 2021, there were 12 million subscribers to the different streaming platforms, a figure that is equivalent to 55 percent of Internet users in the country, according to data from The CIU.
On the other hand, data from IAB Mexico, The platforms that became most popular among Mexican consumers were: Netflix (63.5 percent), Disney (11.6 percent), HBO Max (9.3 percent), Amazon Prime Video (7.1 percent). Below were Claro Video, Blim TV and YouTube.
As of today, we are talking about Netflix as the most widely used streaming video platform on the market, with more than 230 million registered subscribers worldwide, as the company announced at the beginning of 2023; However, the competition has been positioning itself each time, although with some setbacks.
Disney Plus loses subscribers and crisis affects streaming
Just yesterday it was revealed that Disney Plus would lay off some 7,000 employees, adding to the already long list of companies that ended 2022 and began 2023 with this type of massive layoffswhich, however, do not stop.
“While this is necessary to address the challenges we face today, I do not take this decision lightly. I have enormous respect and appreciation for the talent and dedication of our employees around the world, and I am aware of the personal impact of these changes,” said Bob Iger, CEO of the company.
Now, as a further aggravation of this crisis, Disney Plus, the platform for streaming of the company, reported, for the first time, a loss of 2.4 million subscribers during the last three months of 2022, according to what Variety points out.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the firm’s revenues increased by up to 8 percent compared to the same period of the previous year thanks to the Disney theme parks.
With this reduction in subscribers, Disney Plus remains with a total of 161.8 million registered users. According to what has been disclosed, this reduction is due to the increase in prices, which arrived during the first fiscal quarter of the year, which is contemplated between September and December.
For Netflix, it seems like good news, especially at a time when the number of users grew significantly, although far from the figures it reached in 2020, the most relevant year of the pandemic.
