What audience are animated films aimed at? Who can enjoy them? The answers to these controversial questions put the spotlight on Bob Chapek, CEO of Disney, who has a controversial point of view on animated films. Unfortunately, it is not the first controversy in which the businessman gets involved.
Chapek was recently interviewed by The Wall Street Journal and issued a statement that obviously raised all kinds of reactions among fans and people involved with the industry. His words were the following:
“I always say that when parents put their children to bed after watching an animated movie, they probably won’t see another animated movie. They want something for themselves.”
Reactions against him immediately began. One of the most commented was Christopher Miller, filmmaker as The great LEGO adventure either Hamburger rain, and writer of Spider-Man: A new universe. If the three films have anything in common, it is that they are enjoyed by children and adults. Here is his brief but forceful response.
Another who responded to the controversial comments was William of the Bullwhich has not stopped receiving praise for its adaptation of Pinocchio. And interestingly, a common comment is that the film has everything to captivate its adult viewers as well.
“Animation is not a genre for children. It’s a medium. Animation is cinema. Animation is art. And it can tell beautiful and complex stories that feel handmade by humans for humans”, mentioned the Mexican filmmaker.
Chapek’s statements are curious for other reasons. Although Disney is the leading studio when it comes to animated films, the truth is that a large part of its audience is adult. And just as an example, every time Disney animated movies release a trailer, most of the comments are from adults.
So far, Chapek has not commented on the numerous responses against him, but it will be interesting to see how the audience behaves, since a strange world, the studio’s new animated film, will hit theaters in less than a month. Do you think he is right or are you one of those who watch an animated movie no matter what?
John Joseph Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the cinema up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movies.
