The face is a sign of identity, therefore, the diseases that affect it influence both the physical and emotional state of the individual. Above all, because it is the letter of introduction to the different groups; family, student or work; and because of their appearance, many times the person is judged, relegated or accepted in society.
In fact, injuries or diseases of the face are more common than we think. Since, especially, the skin of the face is faced by climatic changes and hormonal factors, which alter it. Likewise, in this area, we can find organs of the senses and a very exposed muscular and bone structure. Where the risk of suffering contractures and discomfort is much higher.
Face diseases affect quality of life
In reality, any pathology attached to the face can lead to psychological alterations. Above all, in adolescence, where physical appearance and social acceptance are of great importance. In addition, the beauty standards imposed by society show stereotypes that are marked in public ideology, causing discrimination against individuals who do not conform to it.
- This is how facial skin is affected by environmental pollution, sun exposure, diet and hormonal changes. Giving way to annoying and worrisome conditions; if they are not treated in time; like acne, vitiligo, melasma, wrinkles, and cancer. Fortunately, there are now innovative oral medications and treatments; such as fractional laser, radiofrequency and mesoplasty, which bring beauty and youth to the face.1
- Likewise, bone fractures of the nose, cheeks, jaw and eye socket are frequent; especially in athletes and adolescents. Generating symptoms such as double vision, swelling, chronic pain and poor occlusion of the teeth. But, rest, the use of oral anti-inflammatories, surgery or the technique of suturing with a wire, will be treatment alternatives; depending on the severity that is exposed on the x-rays.2
- In the same way, diseases of the facial nerves appear, such as trigeminal neuralgia and Bell’s palsy. Whose symptoms; Difficulty making expressions, loss of sense of taste and / or involuntary watering and drooling; they can cause temporary pain and deformity in almost all cases. Therefore, corticosteroids, physical therapy, surgery, or alternative techniques such as acupuncture, are highly recommended.3
- Also, we can include among the pathologies that affect the face, those caused by genetics. It is here where the cleft lip, cleft palate and alterations in the structure of the bones of the nose and jaw occur. Whose treatment is outlined towards a reconstructive surgery, to correct the functioning of these organs and improve the quality of life. Likewise, comprehensive language therapy is necessary to improve the form of communication and self-esteem.4
As we can see, diseases of the face can be treated and cured, in most cases. Thanks to medical advances and timely treatment. Thus, as a multifunctional group made up of a dermatologist, ENT specialist, dentist, therapist, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, will be in charge of determining the diagnostic aids and the appropriate process; according to the specific needs of each patient.
