INEGI data indicate that one of the main causes for which people are discriminated against is because of their appearance and/or clothing.
In August of last year, Conapred revealed that it would open an investigation in order to determine whether or not acts of racism were carried out in said restaurant.
The case of discrimination in Sonora Grill that was reported last year seems to be coming to an end with a series of actions that, ultimately, will not leave the owners of said establishment in a good light, since the current Head of Government of the City from Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that there will be “strong sanctions.”
In August of last year, it was announced a strong complaint by the employees of the exclusive restaurant Sonora Grill who assure that their bosses ask them to divide clients by their skin color and physical appearance.
Of course, as expected, the case reached social networks and immediately not only became a trend, but its viralization caused such effects that, to this day, the matter continues to be discussed, either as a mockery or as a reminder that, today, the issue of racism and discrimination are still part of the culture in different societies.
In this sense, in matters of discrimination or racism in Mexico, one of the main causes for which people are discriminated against is precisely because of their appearance and/or clothing, this according to data from the National Survey on Discrimination 2017, from INEGI.
Based on these data, social networks are also extremely important reporting platforms, with a much more immediate and accurate effect, which is why, as we already mentioned, to this day what happened at the Sonora Grill restaurant continues to generate conversation and Undoubtedly, it set an important precedent.
Claudia Sheinbaum: Discrimination at Sonora Grill will have “strong penalties”
When we talk about the Sonora Grill, we are also talking about an accusation that even reached the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City (Conapred), an organization that revealed that it would open an investigation in order to determine if they carried out out or not acts of racism in said restaurant, located on Avenida de Masaryk, in the Polanco neighborhood.

Today, everything indicates that the case of discrimination in Sonora Grill will come to an end, since it is Claudia Sheinbaum herself, Head of Government of Mexico City, who recently declared that there will be “strong sanctions.”
“A resolution on the issue of Sonora Grill is going to come, important because there has not been the cooperation that was expected. And both in commercial establishments, and in the case of people, Discrimination should not be tolerated in any way. There is no cooperation and it cannot be, there is clear evidence of discrimination. There will be the sanction that has to be, this is a city of rights and there can be no discrimination,” said Sheinbaum.

Undoubtedly, we are talking about a time when various efforts have been made in order to eradicate this type of practice; However, the Sonora Grill is not the only one pointed out, since, through social networks, various cases have been reported in restaurants in Polanco or even El Moro, this being one of the most notorious in social media.
