Since its debut in 2015 as an alternative to Skype, Discord It has become one of the largest social platforms on the Internet, with more than 150 million active users per year. The service has become a popular place for many content creators, as well as big brands, to host their communities.
With the initial approach Discord Around gaming as a central and unifying part of the platform’s culture, Discord has also seen collaborations with gaming brands like PlayStation and Microsoft. Now, Xbox is set to receive a major Discord feature.
The new collaboration Xbox It wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft has teamed up with Discord. Both Xbox and Discord have frequently highlighted each other through their premium memberships, with Discord’s “Nitro” program giving Xbox Game Pass trials and the Xbox service giving Nitro subscriptions.
However, while Xbox had previously added Discord integration to Xbox One and Series X|S, the partnership was limited to displaying active matches on a player’s profile. Now, one of the biggest features of the platform finally arrives, as Microsoft Reveals Discord Voice Chat Is Coming to Xbox.
Microsoft officially unveiled the upcoming Discord integration on Xbox on Wednesday morning, with the service coming to Xbox insiders first, ahead of a full launch in the future. The integration will require players to link their Xbox and Discord accounts to join a call, allowing players to switch between calls from Discord and Xbox game chat.
However, the Discord integration will still require Xbox users to start or join the call in the Discord client for PC, and will be prompted to “join on Xbox” via the Xbox app for PC before connect in the console.
The incorporation of Discord voice chat by Xbox follows in the footsteps of PlayStation, which first launched Discord integration earlier this year. However, despite Sony buying a stake in Discord, Xbox is set to receive Discord voice chat before PlayStation, as Sony’s offering only features Xbox-like gaming integration.
Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed when a broader rollout of Discord voice chat will come to Xbox, but it plans to “expand it to more users in the coming weeks.”
