The first five races of the year have been disappointing for the Alpine team, which has failed to convert its potential into results. However, Fernando Alonso maintains faith in The Plan for 2022.
That the slowest driver of the team has 24 points and the most competitive only two makes it clear that something is wrong. And that is the story of Alpine in this beginning of the 2022 season.
Esteban Ocon has been regularly slower than Fernando Alonsobut except for a broken engine in Imola, he has not suffered any mishaps and has converted his speed into points.
Instead, Fernando Alonso has even come to show potential for fight for the podium in Australia and has been consistently competitive relative to the fastest mid-field teams. But the failures, the misfortune and the sanctions keep him with two sad points.
The overall result is that Alpine is sixth in the constructors’ championship with 26 points, five less than Alfa Romeo, 20 less than McLaren and with Mercedes already 69 points away. A reality that bears no relation to what was seen on the track.

Fernando Alonso asks for patience
The data is that. But the sensations are different. At least in the case of Fernando Alonso, who is convinced that the results will come.
“In terms of points and results, they will arrive with time. There are 18 races left, if we keep doing things right, the results will come. The sensations are good, “says the man from Oviedo.
“And the perception of the team, and of the rival teams when you stop to talk to them, is that we are quite strong and we have had a good start. Regardless of the points, I am left with the feeling of the people, who are highly appreciating what we are doing up to now”, reiterates Alonso.
The first step to start that path is the Spanish Grand Prix, where Fernando Alonso and Alpine must harvest a good loot of points.
“We are looking for a good result, we have been relatively fast in the first races of this season, but on Sunday we didn’t get the points we wanted. Hopefully in Barcelona it will be a good Sunday, with many points, ”says Fernando Alonso, hopeful.
The Spanish rider also anticipates that his performance has not reached its peak, so he hopes to offer even better races very soon.
“In terms of driving, there are things that we are still improving.. The starts, I’m still not entirely comfortable with the system and the procedure we have, sometimes I make mistakes,” Alonso admits.
“There are things that I need to improve myself and also together with the team working on things that can help me regain that consistency”finishes an Alonso that in some races has had problems with the degradation of the tires.
