Despite the fact that Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5 hit the market in November 2020, rumors about new hardware from Microsoft and Sony are starting to appear online, like the information we could read last week , in which according to TCL Technology, Microsoft and Sony would launch new models of their consoles between 2023 and 2024.
Of course, this has caused a lot of comments about it, especially through social networks. However, this has not been the only place where the debate has arisen, since a medium as important as Digital Foundry has also spoken out about the need for an Xbox Series V or a PlayStation 5 Pro.
Digital Foundry talks about the need for an Xbox Series V or a PlayStation 5 Pro
The famous media spoke through his podcast, where they discussed a multitude of topics, especially highlighting the need for an Xbox Series V or a PlayStation 5 Pro for the next two years. The opinion of the members of the podcast seems to go in unison, since the 3 have questioned the need for a hardware upgrade from consoles to mid-generation. Alex Battaglia assured the following:
I don’t think we need them [nuevas consolas] because there is not yet a large enough install base for the currently released PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Supply constraints throughout the pandemic have thrown these consoles into a broader base. They’ve been selling very well, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a broader install base, which is what I think we need before we get into “Pro console” territory.
On the other hand, John Linneman also spoke about it, who spoke of the fact that despite the fact that consoles like Xbox One X or PS4 Pro arrived in the past, that does not mean that we will see it again in this generation.
I think the PS4 Pro / One X worked for two reasons. Because, one, there was a rise of 4K screens becoming popular, that’s not happening with 8K screens I think.
Second, at least especially from a Microsoft perspective, they knew the original Xbox One was severely underpowered and not well received. It was the first time that Xbox came out with a console that was below average in terms of capabilities. That’s not right for the Xbox brand, so Xbox One X was designed to essentially solve that.
Therefore, it seems that the Digital Foundry team is quite clear that the need for an Xbox Seres V or a PlayStation 5 Pro is non-existent. Now it will be necessary to see if finally these rumors become a reality or not.
