At Decentraland’s third Metaverse Art Week, held August 24-28, the curators turned to new ways of using digital space to offer more interactive and real art experiences.
The metaverse world modeled its latest virtual festival on the real-life Art Biennale, which uses public space to exhibit art. Visitors to the festival in real life (IRL) can tour vast pavilions and working parts of the city to engage with artists and brands outside of traditional gallery walls.
Giovanna Graziosi Casimiro, producer of events and communities at Decentraland, commented to Cointelegraph on this year’s design concept.
“The core value of this year’s art week is to unframe art into spatial experiences. To do this, what we’ve done is reuse public space in Decentraland.”
In the digital world, galleries and art exhibitions are not new. Companies like Spatial have launched art galleries with digital non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and traditional art houses like Sotheby’s are running art events with NFTs.
In Decentraland alone there are six great art galleries hosted by big NFT marketplaces like Rarible, SuperRare and KnownOrigin.
What makes this event different is the way visitors interact with the art. Decentraland expects a sizable turnout, based on metrics from previous events like Metaverse Fashion Week, which saw 108,000 unique visitors.according to the foundation.
The quality of metaverse events and avatars is one of the main discussions in the industry after comments about the quality of events like Metaverse Fashion Week. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg recently received criticism about the quality of the avatars available in his new digital experiences.
Casimiro said that this is a priority for the Decentraland team in the development of these events:
“Our team really worked hard to bring new mechanics to Decentraland so a lot of those art installations have raw interaction.”
This can be seen in action through Opensea’s infinity gallery, where users can place themselves in an interactive room of infinity art in motion. According to the team, the use of this mechanic in your metaverse is a first and the community will be able to use it in the repository.
As attractive as digital art design is, for new users accessibility is still an issue. Across the industry, experts highlight education as a key factor in breaking down barriers to entry.
Casimiro told Cointelegraph that creating educational and accessibility components in digital events is critical to keeping users engaged.
“In the long term we always have to leave the metaverse with real knowledge. I am very convinced that we have to use the metaverse as an instrument to communicate knowledge and make it accessible to people.”
Interactive art galleries, poetry readings, and digital performances are the next frontier of the metaverse. In July, metaverse infrastructure company Condense launched new technology to livestream IRL events to the digital world.
