After winning over audiences with his incarnation of Luis Miguel in the Netflix series of the same name, the celebrated Mexican actor has his sights set on another real-life character. As stated by Diego Boneta in an interview with Vogue MX, his next jump to the cinema will be in the shoes of Fidel Castro; emblematic and no less controversial figure of Latin America, who led the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, to later assume power in that Caribbean nation for almost half a century.
According to recent statements by Diego Boneta, the film in which he will play Fidel Castro is a political thriller, which will begin filming next month. Produced by Josh Glick, the actor’s manager and who currently runs the Three Amigos production house along with Boneta and his sister Natalia.
«There is a role that I am preparing for and that I am excited to talk about because of the challenges that it implies. I will play Fidel Castro in a film that begins shooting in August and will be produced by my partner Josh along with Brad Feinstein,” the actor told Vogue MX. It will be directed by a director nuyorican [puertorriqueño que radica en Nueva York] extremely talented, in addition to the fact that among the cast there is someone who I consider one of my heroes in this industry ».
Boneta did not give further details about it. For example, it is not clear if the film in question will focus entirely on Castro, in the manner of a biopic. However, he assured that the intention is to “push the limits”, beyond just being inspired by real events. In his words, the Cuban leader —who died in 2016— will be explored as an “active figure and catalyst for many things that happened when he lived [y que] they changed the course of world history and, of course, of Latin America.”
“It’s an incredible script with a dream cast,” remarked the 32-year-old interpreter. «It is a role that not only excites me, but with which I feel a great responsibility because there has not been such a deep production on him, despite the fact that he is one of the most important characters of the last centuries, who was at the top of power for several decades.
For now, Boneta said he was in Madrid, preparing his character with the advice of Juan Carlos Coraza, his acting teacher. But not everything is interpretive: obviously embodying the historic revolutionary leader will require the actor to physically transform himself, and for this, he will collaborate with Bill Corso, Oscar-winning makeup artist for A series of unfortunate events (2005) and who made up Boneta for Luis Miguel: The series (2018-2021).
Antonio G. Spindola I have very bad memory. Out of solidarity with my memories, I choose to lose myself too. Preferably in a movie theater.
