In Mexico, 70% of citizens are overweight and almost a third are obese. This disease is mainly associated with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, but also with muscle and bone disorders and some types of cancer.
To know the degree of obesity, it is important to know the BMI
Unhealthy eating habits as well as lack of physical activity cause 32% of deaths in women and 20% in men in the country. In case you didn’t know, the most effective way to know the degree of obesity and overweight in people is according to their Body Mass Index (BMI).
According to criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO), a person is considered overweight when their BMI is between 25 and 29.9; Grade I obesity is considered when the BMI is between 30 and 34.9; grade II obesity when the BMI is between 35 and 39.9 and grade III obesity when the BMI is equal to or greater than 40.
Tips to effectively stop being overweight
In order to avoid obesity, not only in Mexico, but worldwide, there are a series of guidelines that can be followed to stop it, such as the following:
- Drink water: between 6 and 8 glasses a day (each glass 250 ml), avoiding the consumption of juices, soft drinks or any sugary drinks.
- Perform physical activity: 30 minutes a day is recommended for adults and one hour for children and adolescents.
- Modify your diet: to do this, increase the consumption of vegetables and fruits and decrease the consumption of foods that contain carbohydrates, fats and salt.
