Blizzard has shared for the first time this year new details of Devil IV revealing that will have more than 150 dungeons to explore. The company has released the first quarterly update to the ARPG explaining how it’s bringing its environments and dungeons to life using props, lighting, interactives, and more.
“We approach the creation of the environments of Diablo IV through a darker and more grounded interpretation than previous installments“, explains Chris Ryder, environment art director. “The goal is credibility, not realism… The atmosphere is almost tangible in some places, with weather and lighting playing a more prominent visual role in Diablo IV“. Thus, the areas of the game will present variations such as fog and rain.
For his part, Chaz Head, main artist of props and interactives, has explained that in Diablo IV the boats bobbing in the ocean or the nets hanging in the market to dry in certain places in the game exist to “bring to life the impressive architecture and land work” to proportionate “the real world scale representing the world of Diablo“.
Back to the Diablo IV dungeons, with such a high number, the team has required to change the way they create environmental art so that it is flexible enough to be used in multiple dungeons instead of a single location. “To create as much high-quality content, we found clever ways to reuse our tile sets and add enough variety to cover more than 150 dungeons“explains Brian Fletcher, associate art director for environments. “All while delivering new experiences every time“.
Diablo IV will arrive at a date yet to be determined on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
