The cut of Suicide Squad David Ayer continues to give people something to talk about, and now the director hinted that, if his original version of the film had been released, he could have ended up as president of the DC film division.
The above was said as part of an interview on the podcast Royal Ones, hosted by actor Jon Bernthal. At some point in the conversation, the subject of the famous “yesterday cut” and the filmmaker delved into the matter:
«For a while, on Suicide Squad, when the first shots came in, people were like, ‘Oh, crap, maybe Yesterday is going to take over DC.’. It’s Game of Thrones. Palace politics were insane.”
However, he also responsible for Bright (2014) once again made it clear that the decision to edit the film to change its tone was made entirely by the Warner Bros. studio, something that filled all the people involved in the production with frustration, since it was expected with excitement that it would be released. your work without alterations of any kind. These were his words:
“They never did tests with my cut, and the thing is, I have it, fuck, I have it, and if I didn’t, oh my God … Everyone I’ve shown the setup to has the same reaction: anger. Like: ‘This is the movie we wanted, why didn’t we get this?’

In addition, he continued to talk about all the mystery that was created around his film, mentioning the way in which the public has reacted to the existence of the original cut.
He also reiterated that James Gunn is looking for a way to release it for exhibition:
“Now it’s like the Schrödinger cut. Is it more legendary to see it or more legendary not to see it? I talked to James Gunn, and he looks… he’s trying to sort out all that mess. They want to organize some things first, you know? I have shown it to people, but it is hard because I want to get over it, damn it, I want to heal from this ».
According to what the director tells, the changes that were made to the film were to emulate the tone of deadpool (2016) and to calm the waters after the failure in critics of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016):
“Deadpool came out, and then they never tested Batman v Superman, they put the movie out and never did a test. And they expected a different outcome, and then they got hammered by all the critics, and then it was like, ‘Okay, let’s turn David Ayer’s dark and heartwarming movie into a fucking comedy now.’ That broke me. That broke my ass. I tell people that Hollywood is like watching someone you love get screwed over by someone you hate.”
Would you like to see the cut of Suicide Squad of David Yesterday? How would things have been with him in charge of the studio? Interestingly, someone who did become co-chairman of DC Studios thanks to a movie based on the same team was James Gunn himself.
Jose Roberto Landaverde I love writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to cinema. I love music and am a fan of The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Paramore. My favorite movies are Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I’ll climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleportation machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented.
