The upcoming film inspired by the popular children’s show Barney and his friends will not fit for girls and boys, but for distressed millennials. So he made it known kevin mckeonvice president of the production house Mattel Films, in a recent interview with New Yorker.
On the other hand, the manager clarified that this does not mean that the feature film about the nice purple dinosaur is going to have an adult classification. Rather, the project’s focus will be on speaking deeply about a disenchanted generation.
“We are inclined to address the anxiety of the millennials instead of adjusting it to children’s audiences, “said McKeon. «[Nuestra película de Barney] It is a work for adults. And it’s not that it’s R-rated, but it will focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being in your thirties, having grown up with Barney; in the level of disenchantment within this generation”.
The film in question was announced in 2019, with the involvement of the Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluya (Flees!, Judas and the Black Messiah) in the role of producer. The Briton’s involvement was what would ensure that the new approach would “wow audiences and exceed expectations,” Mattel Films said at the time. The company also stated that, although the plan was to appeal to the older public, it was also intended that the tape would be entertaining for children.
In November 2020, Kaluuya already anticipated that his version of Barney would talk about very human themes; in this case, about the anguish of unrequited love, which contradicts the maxim of the innocent original program (“I love you and you love me”).

In his recent comments to New YorkerMcKeon also ventured to say that this film project would have surreal overtones, in addition to the fact that the concept would be reminiscent of the work of filmmakers Charlie Kaufman (I think about the end) and Spike Jonze (Her). And as if that were not enough, Mattel Films has sold it to potential partners as a movie “type A24”referring to the prestigious alternative film production house, responsible for the Academy Award-winning Everything everywhere at the same time.
«[Equipararla al cine de A24] It would be very bold of us and really underscore that we are here to make art,” McKeon added.
After officially establishing itself as Mattel Films in 2018, the popular toy brand’s film division set out to launch a new series of proactive films based on its intellectual properties. The first of these tapes will be Barbie, by director Greta Gerwig and with Margot Robbie in the role of the titular doll. Its premiere in Mexican theaters will take place on July 20, 2023. Antonio G. Spindola I have very bad memory. Out of solidarity with my memories, I choose to lose myself too. Preferably in a movie theater.
