With Craig Breen out of the equation after his move to M-Sport, Hyundai’s lineup for the Monza Rally seemed clear. Only a strange and unlikely decision to give Oliver Solberg kilometers in the third Hyundai i20 WRC Coupé could change a totally predictable line-up, not least because the WRC constructors’ title is at stake. Thus, Dani Sordo to join forces with Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak at the Monza Rally, last round of the 2021 WRC season and that says end point to the World Rally Car stage within the championship.
With the drivers’ title decanted in favor of Toyota, whether for Sébastien Ogier or for Elfyn Evans, Hyundai’s only hope of saying goodbye to this stage and its current car with a success is to sign an almost epic comeback in the constructors’ classification. It should be remembered that Toyota has an income of 47 points compared to the South Korean firm, so the boys led by Andrea Adamo must set an almost perfect rally and hope that Toyota does not have a good weekend in Monza. With everything, It seems unlikely that Hyundai can turn the tables.
On an individual basis, Dani Sordo closes another great season at the Monza Rally in which he has once again demonstrated that having a partial program is not an impediment to being truly competitive. In fact, the Cantabrian rider has contested six rallies with a balance of two podiums, two ‘top 5’ and two events outside the points. The best result of the season for Sordo was second place in the Rally de Portugal, although it is true that the Spanish driver comes from obtaining a third place in the RACC de Catalunya Rally that has kept alive Hyundai.
