Don’t Miss: The Definitive Collection of Marvel Graphic Novels
Dan Jurgens tells of his successful career being part of the team that ended the life of the Man of Steel in the Distinguished Competition. In addition to being one of the architects of his return, and in 1998 he joined the ranks of Marvel to take the stories of Thor in a new stage.
Jurgens teamed up at the House of Ideas with John Romita Jr. for one of Thor’s most important arcs: In Search of the Gods, where Odinson will face three gods on his mission to protect Earth.
The search for the Gods
In an interview with Jeffery Klaehn, Dan Jurgens explained that it was the first thing he tried to do when he started writing the Thor stories.
“I wanted to tell a good funny story with great and exciting visuals. After all, if Thor is a god, you have to push that angle. That’s one of the things that makes it unique”.
For this event Jurgens, the star behind the comics reauge, teamed up with another big name, John Romita Jr, of whom the author has only praise.
“John is brilliant. I think in many ways Thor was his best work. The sense of power and presence he gave the character was truly reminiscent of the best things about Kirby. No matter what I gave him, he managed to overcome what he could possibly have hoped for, which in turn, made me work even harder. I think we were challenging each other every step of the way”.
What makes Marvel different from its competition?
Dan Jurgens’ career began at DC Comics in 1982, and in 1996 the Minnesota-born changed his scene by signing with Marvel, where for six years he became the writer of Thor.
Jurgens reflected on what makes Marvel different in relation to its most staunch competitor, highlighting the human factor and empathy as keys to the success of La Casa de las Ideas
“Marvel is a universe, with a continuous story. DC is a multiverse with many different variations of the same characters. Both versions are fine, but there is one key difference. Marvel characters tend to be more imperfect, I think, and often more human, while DC characters tend to be more noble.“
