The giant of Cupertino experience the joys of the launch of a device that revolutionizes the digital age, the Apple Vision Pro. The new VR glasses became a sensation during the first week of their arrival on the market, and although they are somewhat expensive, they mark a before and after in this type of devices, which will surely begin to become normalized among users.
Lowering the price of the device must be Apple's main objective, if it wants to sell massively around the world. But in addition, the Cupertino company must take into consideration some security and privacy vulnerabilities, detected by ESET, a leading cybersecurity firm in the world.
The experts of ESET They met in their laboratories to analyze the possible threats that may appear with the launch of this device. First of all, they point out that since it is a new device, which has a new Operating System, there are vulnerabilities in the installations of the applications, one of hackers' favorite places to operate.
“Whether due to characteristics coming from the operating system or due to some eventual oversight in the composition of the applications that will be installed on AppleVision, it is possible for cybercriminals to exploit vulnerabilities in computers. Exploiting vulnerabilities is one of the tricks used by criminals to spread threats such as Trojans and ransomware,” the company explains in a statement.
In the case of ransomware, the device will be inhibited from fully performing its functions and victims will have two options: contact Apple for help – since Vision does not have an interface that allows direct interaction with the operating system to reinstall it -, or paying the ransom, something that ESET strongly discourages, because whoever pays the ransom finances the group of cybercriminals and allows them to attack even more victims,” the cybersecurity expert firm detailed.
In the case of infection with a Trojan, cybercriminals can have access to all the cameras and sensors available on the device, viewing and monitoring everything the victim sees. It would be like having a criminal next to you while using the device, without privacy.
The idea is not to attack the use of the Apple Vision Pro. This happens with new features in any operating system, be it iOS, Android, Microsoft or any other. What we are trying to explain is that since it is a new program, users need to have their alarms turned on more than ever to avoid falling victim to cybercriminals or hackers.
In fact, ESET recognizes Apple's efforts in security and privacy.
“Apple certainly takes steps to mitigate potential risks, but, as we know, nothing is 100% secure and access to information through a device like the Apple Vision Pro will undoubtedly bring many debates about how everything should happen. so that more protections are created. It will be up to all technology users to remain alert so that there are fewer chances of them happening,” said Daniel Cunha Barbosa, Computer Security Researcher at ESET Latin America.
