Nearly five full years after its release date, Cuphead is finally getting its big DLC with the upcoming release of The Delicious Last Course expansion pack. Featuring a new playable character, new bosses, new weapons, and much more, this DLC also marks the end of the game’s long development cycle.
Maya Moldenhauer, studio director and executive producer of StudioMDHRthe team behind Cuphead, recently participated in an interview in which he discussed the intellectual property of Cuphead and his future after the release of The Delicious Last Course.
Moldenhauer also dropped some hints about the nature of the next project of StudioMDHR, although he kept them quite vague on purpose. Per Moldenhauer’s comment, The Delicious Last Course is, in fact, a compilation of pretty much all the ideas StudioMDHR still had after Cuphead come to light.
These concepts and features were improved and implemented into the game after receiving an extra round of polish. The gameplay of The Delicious Last Course reflects this as well, as much of what has been shown feels like its own expansion on the core experience of Cuphead.
Now that Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course has gone gold, StudioMDHR can start thinking ahead and conceptualizing their next project. According to Moldenhauer, “the sky is the limit”, and it is highly unlikely that the studio’s next game will have anything to do with Cuphead.
However, Moldenhauer has admitted that the team has a strong predilection for 2D animation and pencil illustrations, so the visual DNA will remain the same, regardless of which premise you stick to.
