What is Snake Eyes about?
Snake Eyes the origin stars Henry Golding actor seen in movies like Last Christmas and a little favor, in the role of Snake Eyes, the popular GI Joe ninja, in which the story of the film is centered, which follows in its origins a lonely young man who travels the world trying to find the murderer of his father who ends up joining to an ancestral Japanese clan called the Arashikage, after having saved the life of their heir. Upon his arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes to act like a ninja warrior, while also bringing him something he has always longed for: a home. Review
The film had the difficult role of making previous GI Joe installments forget, something in theory easy enough to focus in this reboot on telling the story of one of its most beloved characters in the franchise, the mysterious ninja known as Snake Eyes. , for this they have rewritten the history of origins that they told us in the two previous films, making a more adult version join the ninja clan to which Tommy Arashikage belongs after saving the life of a group of Yakuzas, and developing the relationship of brothers and great friends of arms as it was done in the comics, although in a very different way, since in the comics Snake and Tommy served together in the army, and it is Snake who owes his life to Tommy, after saving him He’s on one of the missions they served in Vietnam.
Likewise, the character’s origin story is very different from the material in the comics, since in them he is a person who had had military training and loses his parents in a car accident, very different from what happens in the film, with his father murdered and without any mention of what happened to his mother, turning Snake Eyes into a story of revenge. If the secret of his true name and place of birth is kept, it is still classified, even in this origin story, so fans of the character will be double disappointed if they expected one of the most anticipated answers for them.
The film compensates for a poor script and in moments if it felt with impressive action scenes and fights with ninja warriors, at the photography level there were moments in which the camera moved in such a way that it was difficult to see certain scenes in focus and in others it would have been grateful for some kind of slow motion, simply because the scene was crying out for it.
As for the protagonists, the secondary characters stand out mostly, Andrew Koji as Tommy Arashikage completely steals the spotlight from Henry Golding who shows a more credible interpretation with many nuances and as a ninja warrior he is brutal, something that cannot be said about his protagonist, it is also curious how in this story the roles are reversed in Snake Eyes the origins that show the main character as the great villain, and the character destined to be as the true villain of the story and responds to Storm Shadow’s hatred for Snake Eyes, but as I have been saying, the ending is also very far from the original story, something that it did not do GI Joe retaliation.
Also to highlight the character of Úrsula Corberó as La varonesa, whose mission was to make her predecessor Sienna Miller forget, and I think she more than fulfills; and eager to see more in action Iko Uwais as the Hard master, although his character has also been changed notably with respect to the original material.
In short, if you are not very demanding with the plot of a movie, and you want to enjoy action and ninja fights, you certainly cannot miss it, but … if you are a fan of Snake Eyes, coherent plots and the GI Joe universe, you will probably come out disappointed in its viewing, or as a server, quite indignant with the treatment they have given to one of the coolest characters of the GI Joe who prefers the version of the two previous films no matter how bad they were. I also leave a recurring question here. How difficult is it to adapt the incredible original material that already exists?
