“It is a super sweet photo”, comments an Internet user to the publication of the image of a baby in Instagram. “That’s child abuse, it can’t be allowed,” says another person when she sees the exact same image.
The split of opinions not only occurs in political matters, but in almost any area of daily life.
An interesting example to analyze is the photo of the baby in a pink dress with a surgical mask with holes in her eyes that has gone viral on social networks.
The photo was taken on a plane in New Zealand and is the subject of disputes (fierce, in some cases) between those who see the action as an example of protection by the mother towards her little daughter, and those who understand that deals with child abuse.
Controversy over the photo of the masked baby
The image, initially published by Jandre Opperman on Instagramhas gone viral and, although many praise the mother for trying to protect her baby dressed in pink from the possibility of contracting Covid, others say it is abuse.
There are no grays in opinions: it is black or white.
According to the photographer who captured the image, it was taken on an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Wellington on July 1. He himself described it as a “super sweet interaction” and “not at all sinister.”
“The baby was happy, jumping and laughing. She made waiting to get off the plane a little more entertaining,” she explained.
But some Internet users were outraged by the photo: “If I saw that on a flight, I would take his mask off.”
Others pointed out that it was an “incredibly sad” photo and that it was “dangerous to cover her breathing holes” the way the mother did.
The photographer, who has made his Instagram account private since the photo went viral, defended the mother and said the mask was not tight around the baby’s face.
Another person creatively said that the baby was “training to be a superhero” and that “the world is not ready for SuperBaby yet.”
Some commenters also found the image very funny and compared the baby to characters from horror movies.
In New Zealand, all passengers over the age of 12 are required to wear face masks on domestic flights.
For younger children who wear a mask, it is recommended that parents choose one that fits well and is comfortable to wear.
