Different UK government institutions are in the middle of a controversy, after a report by The Guardian found that they are using artificial intelligence for decision making, about social benefits to citizens.
Employees of these organizations would be leaving in the hands of the algorithms who receives social assistance or who meets the conditions to have a marriage license.
Infobae highlights, citing the Guardian article, that the situation escalates to British ministries and police forces. They let artificial intelligence make decisions related to people’s well-being, immigration benefits and, in some cases, even criminal justice.
The problem is that these artificial intelligences are not prepared to issue an accurate opinion, and they find that in many cases they give discriminatory results.
“Some notable cases include a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) algorithm which, according to an MP, wrongly led to several people losing their benefits.”
Added to this is that a facial recognition tool used by the Police identifies mostly people of color as criminals, without any other sustainable argument. They would use this to deny asylum or legal entry into British territory.
The Ministry of the Interiorr He maintained some time ago that he began using artificial intelligence to speed up the reading of passports at airports. That, they said, helped them improve the detection of false marriage applications seeking permanent residence through illegitimate unions.
However, when verifying the internal evaluations of rejected applications, there is a disproportion in citizens from Albania, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria. They put a magnifying glass on some requests and many were not false, meaning the AI failed.
