He consumer confidence index (CCI) Mexican increased 0.5 points in February compared to the previous month to reach 44.8, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) revealed on Tuesday with seasonally adjusted figures.
Compared to the same month of 2022, the ICC, prepared jointly by the Inegi and the Bank of Mexico, rose 1.7 points.
The ICC had monthly increases in four of the five components that comprise it, but a monthly contraction of 0.9 points and an annual contraction of 0.7 in the indicator of “expected economic situation of household members within 12 months, compared to the current one” .
The factor that registers a greater rise is that of “current possibilities of the members of the household, compared to those of a year ago, to make purchases of furniture, television, washing machine, other household appliances, etc.”, with a monthly increase of 2.5 points and an annual one of 4.7.
It was followed by the “economic situation of the country today, compared to that of 12 months ago”, which increased by 1.1 points in the month and 2.6 in the year.
While the “current economic situation of household members compared to what they had 12 months ago” had a monthly rise of 0.3 points and an annual one of 1.3.
And, finally, the “expected economic situation of the country within 12 months, compared to the current one” rose 0.1 points month-on-month and 0.7 points year-on-year.
These data come amid accelerating inflation in Mexico, which registered an annual rate of 7.91% in January, the highest for a start of the year in the last two decades.
They are also spread after it was revealed on Tuesday that the gross domestic product (GDP) Mexico grew 3.1% in 2022 driven by all sectors and above expectations.
