Last CES 2019 Sony announced its intention to revolutionize the world of music distribution with the 360 Reality Audio sound system, a new spatial audio format that would gradually reach different streaming services over the next few months.
The idea behind this system was to create a object-based sound format allowing artists and content creators to map sound sources such as voices, choirs and instruments with positional information instead of being permanently associated with a specific channel as is done in traditional production.
Thus, in theory, it is possible better recreate the original creator experience adapting in real time to the number of speakers available in the listening room. It is, so to speak, like a Dolby Atmos but originally born with music distribution in mind rather than movie theaters.
First the format came to Amazon Music HD, Deezer and Tidal, being preferably accessible from compatible sound equipment of the manufacturer. However, from now on we are going to see an expansion of the ecosystem, as Sony has announced that 360 Reality Audio is now available on Amazon Music Unlimited. with any type of headphones. According to Tyler Ishida, Vice President of Consumer Business Group at Sony:
We are delighted to introduce more services and devices capable of providing the consumer the opportunity to experience 360 Reality Audio. It’s a powerfully immersive audio experience that represents our commitment to delivering high-quality sound to the listener that preserves the true intent of the creator.
Also compatible with Android 12 and third-party equipment
Sony has further noted that the upcoming version of the Android 12 operating system supports MPEG-H 3D Audio, which includes 360 Reality Audio. In this way, devices with an Android operating system they will be able to reproduce 360 Reality Audio by incorporating the decoder, which will make it easier to develop devices that are compatible with the new format.
With this integration, Sony hopes to accelerate the expansion of devices compatible with 360 Reality Audio that we assume will be able to reach mobiles, tablets, players and even potentially to smart TV.
The manufacturer has also indicated that the format will be integrated into equipment from other brands, which will include 360 Reality Audio certification on devices such as Audio-Technica headphones, Sennheiser sound bars, McIntosh AV processors and Amazon Echo Studio speakers.
In addition, for the purchase of Sony headphones, customers will receive a 4 month free trial from Amazon Music Unlimited Individual Plan.
