Its consumption and preparation has passed from generation to generation, thanks to the popular “family botaneros”, businesses located in the first square of the town where this drink is preserved and promoted. Through a press release, the Government of Colima spread this magical drink.
What is Comala punch?
Known as the “White Town of America” and located just 20 minutes from the state capital, Comala is a destination full of traditions that infect all the people who visit it. Not for nothing the great Mexican writer Juan Rulfo was inspired by this place to give life to his great masterpiece: Pedro Páramo.
Part of that great love and inspiration is due to the rich gastronomic variety of the Colima lands, with culinary gems such as the popular Ponche de Comala, a drink with a unique flavor that is prepared with water or milk, fruits or grains and a variable dose of pure cane alcohol. Some producers also usually use raw cow’s milk, mezcal or tuxca, which is an artisanal distillate made with more than ten varieties of wild agaves.
A delight that you cannot do without
The Comaltecs in charge of making the punch use fruits such as blueberry, guava, prunes, pomegranate, coconut with pineapple or tamarind to give a touch of freshness to the mixture, although they also like coffee, almonds, pistachios, peanuts, walnuts and the cajeta for creamy milk-based punches.
Of this varied list of ingredients there is one that deserves a special mention: the macadamia nut. The popularity of this nut originally from Australia is widespread in our country, since in addition to the crops in Comala, the macadamia is present in the lands of Michoacán, Puebla and Veracruz.
Also known as Queensland, Maroochi or bush nuts, macadamia has a special flavor similar to condensed milk and is high in Omega 3 and 7 oils, recommended to combat cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce arthritis and relieve migraines; in addition to being good for the heart.
Thanks to its unmatched flavor and health benefits, the production and sale of punch represents a valuable source of income for dozens of Comaltec families and a delight for national and foreign visitors.
Comala Punch, Bread and Coffee Fair
