The Head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardoannounced that the Mexican health system will be transformed into IMSS-Wellbeing to, as she mentions, benefit all the inhabitants, whether or not they have social security.
“The city’s Health System is one of the most robust in the entire country, however, we have made the decision in a very important way that the Mexico City Health System is part of the federalization process that headed today by the President of the Republic and which is one of the main programs to guarantee the right to health in our country. This means that the health centers and hospitals will be in charge of the ‘IMSS-BIENESTAR’, that means, the ‘IMSS-BIENESTAR’, which will provide health care to the population in general”, he expressed.
Accompanied by the mayor of Cuajimalpa, Adrián Rubalcava, the president of the capital reported that The Cuajimalpa General Hospital will be the first hospital to be incorporated into the “IMSS-BIENESTAR” program.” and will operate with about 700 people who provide general and specialized medical care, in order to meet a demand that the inhabitants of the demarcation had requested for many years.
“We will enter a process where the Mexico City Health System will be strengthened, in such a way that, at the end of the administration, the city’s Health System will be one of the best health systems there is, not only in the country, but in many other cities around the world,” he added.
Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the City of Mexico has 9.2 million inhabitantsof whichhalf are treated at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and in the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE); while in the Hospitals and Health Centers of the Capital Government Around 6 million people who do not have social security are served: 4.5 million from Mexico City and close to 2 million from the State of Mexico.
At the beginning of the current capital administration, there were 13 general hospitals out of 32 hospitals in the country’s capital. Currently, there are three new hospitals: the General Hospital of Topilejo, Tlalpan, and the General Hospital of La Pastora, Gustavo A. Madero, both in operation; and the General Hospital of Cuajimalpa, soon to start operations.
At the time, the general director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, pointed out that the General Hospital of Cuajimalpa will be operated by the IMSS-BIENESTAR program in one of the parts of the city that best preserves the sense of community, of union and good neighborliness. Also highlighted that the hospital represents a space that frames and describes the actions of the federal government in terms of joint work and as a team in health matters, since despite the pandemic and the fact that CDMX had the highest number of infections and hospitalizations, the work was not suspended.
“It is a great opportunity for a new history to exist, that where there was pain and tragedy, today there may be new hope,” he emphasized.
The IMSS Director General recognized and thanked Claudia Sheinbaum for her leadership during the pandemic, hospital reconversion and vaccination against Covid-19, “He managed to get us all to work for the first time in history since 1943 as a single health system, which did not identify beneficiaries and did it every day on a daily, permanent and tireless basis.”
