The official candidate for the head of the government of Mexico City, Clara Brugadastated this Tuesday that it is a “lie” that the country's capital is going to run out of wateras some experts have warned who predict that 'day zero' of supply could arrive next July.
Yes, we have water problems, historically, but we are not going to run out of water, (the opponents) even set a date for when we are going to run out of water, that is a lie, they are using it as a campaign strategy,”
Brugada said at a public event.
The former mayor of Iztapalapa, one of the internal districts of the capital that has experienced water shortages for years, asserted that 80% of Mexico City's water comes from the underground and the remaining 20% from the dam system. Cutzamalawhich raised alarms for being less than 40% of its capacity.
We have had a drought (as unseen) for 70 years, as there had not been since that date, (but) then it is a lie that they say that the entire city is going to run out of water when only one source is the one that has problems , but it's not going to run out of water either,”
he emphasized.
Concern about water in the Mexican capital is not a new issue, since activists and organizations have been warning for years that the water system is deficient, that large companies make excessive use of this liquid and that the global climate emergency is drying up the dams.
However, Brugada denounced that the water shortage is being used as “political loot” towards the June 2 elections, in which the government of the capital and the former head of government of Mexico City (2018-2023) will be renewed. Claudia Sheinbaum seeks the presidency of the country.
Given this, Brugada pointed out that, if he reaches the head of Government, he will solve this historic problem based on a metropolitan program that involves the neighboring state of Mexico to guarantee supply.
Water cannot only be seen from the city, but is a metropolitan program to guarantee having water. But to talk about the future and not have problems with water wells, we have to make a State policy,”
he pointed out.
He pointed out that this program should not only be every six years but should be strategic “that infiltrates the subsoil,” where there are “millions of liters of water.”
To achieve this, we need to build large regenerative water treatment plants,”
he emphasized.
