However, before they were known as mayors, they were called “delegaciones”, and at that time the CDMX was known as federal District.
Background of the CDMX
The Federal District (DF) was created in the year 1824 and its territorial extension covered a radius of little more than eight kilometers, in which the center was the Zócalo of the capital.
When establishing the Federal Constitution of 1857this same territory was identified as a synonym of Mexico City. It was between the years of 1853 and 1898 when the new limits of the DF were set.
However, The new territorial distribution of the region was made official until 1898, during the government of Porfirio Díaz..
It is important to note that when the Federal District was created, its territorial units had the status of municipality. But on December 1, 1930, each of them, came to be called delegationswith the exception of the one known as the Central Department.
Later, between 1940 and 1970, boundary treaties were made between the neighboring states and the DF, especially in the bed of the Lake Texcoco and the southeast area. For this reason, some bordering populations became part of neighboring federative entities, such as the State of Mexico or Morelos.
In the 70’s there were several legal changes, by which the Central Department was eliminated, which was divided to create the delegations of Miguel Hidalgo, Cuauhtemoc and Venustiano Carranza.
For this reason, the delegations as we know them existed from 1970 to 2016. In this year, a political reform arose with which the delegations became mayors. While the Federal District disappeared and the current Mexico City was established.
