Cisco in the latest edition of its annual study of the Security Outcomes Report reported that cybersecurity resilience is one of the top priorities for businesses when defending against a rapidly evolving threat landscape.
According to Based on survey responses from more than 4,700 participants from 26 countries, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, this report identified seven top success factors that drive business resilience.with particular attention to the cultural, environmental, and solution-based factors that companies leverage to achieve security.
Notably, resilience has gained relevance, with a staggering 62% of organizations surveyed saying they have experienced a security incident that affected their business in the last two years. Among the most recurrent affectations were data or network leaks (51.5%), network or system interruptions (51.1%), ransomware (46.7%) and distributed denial of service attacks (46.4%).
It should be noted that these eventualities had serious repercussions for the companies that suffered them, along with the ecosystem of organizations with which they do business. Among the top sequelae cited were IT and communications disruption (62.6%), supply chain disruption (43%), deterioration of internal operations (41.4%), and lasting damage to the company’s reputation. brand (39.7%).
According to the statement issued about the report, with the different elements in play, it is not surprising that 96% of the executives surveyed for the report said that security resilience is a priority for them. In addition, the results also highlight that the main objectives of security resilience for those responsible for this area and their teams are to prevent incidents and mitigate losses when they occur.
Helen Patton, CISO of Cisco Business Security Group, He mentioned that technology was transforming businesses at a scale and speed never seen before, creating new opportunities, as well as bringing challenges, especially on the security front. “To be able to deal with them effectively, companies must be able to anticipate, identify and resist cyber threats and, if they occur, recover quickly. That is what building resilience is all about.”he claimed.
“After all, security is risky business. Because enterprises don’t protect everything, everywhere, security resiliency allows them to focus their security resources on the parts of the business that add the most value to the organization, and ensure that those values are protected”added Patton.
Seven success factors of security resilience
Cisco’s report this year developed a methodology for generating a security resilience score for surveyed organizations, and identified seven data-backed success factors. According to the results, the organizations that had these factors were in the 90th percentile of resilient companies. In contrast, those without them ranked in the bottom 10 percent.
The study’s findings underscore the fact that safety is a human endeavor, as leadership, company culture, and resourcing greatly influence resilience:
- Organizations reporting low top management support for security scored 39% lower than those with strong executive support.
- Companies that claim to have an excellent security culture scored 46% higher on average than those that did not.
- Companies that have additional staff and internal resources to respond to incidents had 15% higher resilient results.
In addition, companies must be careful to reduce complexity when moving from on-premises to fully cloud-based environments. That is, companies whose technology infrastructures are mostly on-premises or mostly cloud-based scored the highest, and nearly identical, in security resilience. By contrast, companies in the early stages of transitioning from on-premises to a hybrid cloud environment saw their scores drop by 8.5% to 14%, depending on how difficult hybrid environments are to manage.
Finally, the adoption and maturation of advanced security solutions has major implications for resilience outcomes:
- Companies that reported having a trusted Zero Trust model in place experienced a 30% increase in resilience score compared to those that had none.
- Expanded advanced detection and response capabilities were correlated with a whopping 45% increase for organizations over those reporting no detection and response solutions.
- The convergence of networks and security in a trusted environment of secure cloud access services increased security resilience by 27%.
In this sense, Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager of security and collaboration, Cisco, commented that the reports on security results are a study of what works and what does not in cybersecurity. In addition, the ultimate goal is to eliminate market noise by identifying practices that lead to safer results for defenders.
“This year we have focused on identifying the fundamental factors that increase the resilience of a company’s security to place it among the best in the industry”said.
