In the picturesque town of Chignahuapan, Pueblayou will find a unique sanctuary that captures the faith of parishioners and the attention of the curious alike: the Church of the Lord of the “Honguito””.
This sacred place arises from a 19th century legend, in which it is said that a peasant discovered the image of a Christ on the surface of a mushroom, while looking for food.

The town legend, which is passed down from generation to generation, says that this farmer was in search of some mushrooms to eat. However, he ended up finding a miracle mushroom that I had sketched image of jesus on its surface.
In this way a Church was built in the same place where it was found. to the Lord of the Mushroom. In fact, the petrified mushroom was placed in the center of a cross found inside the temple.

A magnifying glass was even placed over the mushroom so that believers and the curious can observe the image of the crucified Christ. For this reason, the mushroom is an object of veneration and devotion by the faithful who come in search of both miracles and blessings.
Today, this church is named after Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, since in front of the temple there is a stone representation of Christ. However, the site is popularly known as the church or sanctuary “of the mushroom”.
Every July 24, the town of Chignahuapan celebrates a folklore procession in honor of the Lord of the Mushroom. This holiday reflects the deep spiritual connection that the community has with this mysterious symbol of faith.
