In his message during the ceremony for the 80th anniversary of the hospital, which he described as cradle of pediatrics in Mexico and mother of the national health institutes, the head of the branch highlighted the importance of ensuring a better health system for the children of Mexico. In addition, it must make it possible to face situations such as the increase in obesity, which was accentuated by isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He remembered that the childhood obesity It has become a global pandemic. Its causes in childhood and adolescence are complex, multifaceted and contribute to the highest morbidity and premature death, which is why they represent innumerable challenges for research and medicine to prevent and manage the problem.
“Today being a doctor is being different. Our ecosystem demands it, the environment is very sick. A third of our school children have a hemato-oncological health problem”.
In this context, before members of the medical community and staff of this institute, Secretary Alcocer stressed the need to ensure a better health system for children and adolescents, as one of the main tasks of the union to make the right decision. .
Mexico has a serious deficit of pediatricians
Alcocer Varela recognized that the number of pediatricians is insufficient to meet the needs of Mexican health. He Mexican Council of Pediatrics points out that 14 thousand 601 specialists work in the country. Of these, half are concentrated in four federative entities.
Against this background, the Children’s Hospital of Mexico It trains specialists in pediatrics, genetics, stomatology and orthodontics. In addition, it offers 211 subspecialty courses, 42 highly specialized courses, and 285 diploma courses.
Its main lines of research are developed in areas such as neuroscience, mental health and basic biomedical science, where 100 specialists recognized by the National System of Researchers (SNI) participate. The figure is three times higher than 10 years ago.
The Secretary of Health explained that the Children’s Hospital of Mexico promotes actions so that more girls and boys have a complete vaccination scheme; reduce the rates of child malnutrition and overweight; improve the psychosocial health of children and the quality of care.

The first kidney transplant in Latin America was performed at this hospital. It has a unique pediatric transplant program in the country, through which multi-organ donations have been made.
He is a pioneer in the care of pandemics such as polio in the 50s, and he installed a COVID laboratory endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The specialist stressed that, with almost 400 census beds, 12 operating rooms, 164 offices, 790 nursing professionals, as well as 2,935 workers, this hospital cares for girls and boys with congenital disorders, cancer, lysosomal diseases, and others.
Between 2009 and 2020, cases of nosocomial disease decreased by 53 percent, the lowest figure compared to the rest of the country’s health institutes.
Regarding the advances in research, the director of the branch, Juan Garduño Espinosa, mentioned the contributions in the basic, clinical, epidemiological area, health economics and evidence-based medicine, always with the purpose of improving the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of patients.
