During 1995 to 2021 in the UK, 34% of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning were from gas networks.
According to Statista, in 2021, approximately 43.7 million tons of carbon monoxide were emitted in the United States.
So far there have been no deaths from the incident at the Pennsylvania nursery.
About 30 people including children and adults were evacuated Tuesday from the Happy Smiles daycare center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, after emergency services responded to a call for a child unconscious from carbon monoxide.
According to the City of Allentown release, 27 children and 8 adult staff members were immediately evacuated due to high concentrations of carbon monoxide. Emergency services set up a treatment and triage area in the facility’s parking lot. In all, 28 patients were transported by ambulance to four area hospitals for monitoring.
The first to arrive at the scene was the fire department to attend to the unconscious child. The nursery was evacuated after air quality detectors used by firefighters were activated.
According to other means, the leak was caused by a malfunctioning heater, coupled with a blocked ventilation system, investigators said. They also noted that the property did not have carbon monoxide detectors, which will be required in child care facilities under a new state law that has not yet gone into effect.
Happy Smiles daycare owner Jesenia Gautreaux said her business will carry out work to correct the problem and hopes it will reopen soon once the repairs are complete.
The last inspection of the nursery by state authorities was late last year, and government records show that the only problem found was a door that remained closed when the fire alarm sounded.
