The Singapore Grand Prix became a black day for Sergio Perez, Max Verstappen and the entire Red Bull team. In a failed qualifying, both drivers were eliminated in Q2, with ‘Checo’ making a critical error when he spun in Turn 2 during his final lap, which relegated him to thirteenth position on the starting grid for the race. Sunday.
From the beginning of qualifying, in Q1, difficulties were looming for Red Bull. Even though ‘Checo’ Pérez achieved competitive times in his first outing, he finished in fourth place, just a tenth behind Tsunoda. However, a red flag interrupted most of the fastest laps due to a crash by Lance Stroll.
In Q2, Pérez and Max Verstappen opted to change tires, but this was not enough to put them in the leading positions. Pérez stayed in eleventh place, which is the elimination zone, setting a time of 1.32.310.
This situation put them under pressure for the second set of laps, and in the midst of this tension, the Mexican driver again made a critical error when he suffered a spin in turn 2. This incident sealed his fate in the classification, leaving him in the thirteenth position.
Max Verstappen also struggled as he failed to complete a successful lap and was eliminated by Liam Lawson. The qualifying session in Singapore proved to be an unexpected challenge for Red Bull and its drivers, who will now look to make up ground in Sunday’s race from late positions on the starting grid.
“We didn’t find grip with the tires. From Q1 to Q2 things got worse. We could have entered Q3 but we never got into the rhythm. Today we were lost. The balance was not positive throughout the qualification. In my last attempt to move into Q3 we no longer had grip and were losing traction. It is very difficult tomorrow to be able to do something here, we must wait for safety car but on this circuit it is very difficult to pass cars” Perez said.
