During the last months, Internet users and a large part of the Information Technology (IT) industry have been obsessed with the scope that Artificial Intelligence has achieved in ChatGPTthe platform developed by Open AI that can be used free of charge from any web browser. Well almost.
The reality is that there are some Operating Systems that, due to their age, simply could not make it possible to access this particular system, which is already in its fourth version. Because the most recent version of your browser is too outdated to support all the protocols and code that bring AI to life.
Fortunately, someone has managed to solve that and has created a variation of ChatGPT developed with the sole purpose of making it possible to use it on computers with Windows 98: JavaGPT.
This program, as its name reveals, uses the power of Java as a bridge to be able to install, configure and run the popular Artificial Intelligence in an operating system from 25 years ago and on which, it is supposed, it would be impossible to test this platform.
The good news is that this is in the past. Although nothing is as simple as it seems.
This is JavaGPT, the version of ChatGPT for Windows 98
That’s just what a developer has done, named FrankCYB, who has recently published in his GitHub his most recent creation, which is technically a derivation of the ChatGPT chatbot, under the already described name of JavaGPT.
As reported by colleagues from windows central This is how the author describes his application, which can run on very old versions of the Microsoft Operating System, from Windows 98, through ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8, along with Windows 10 and 11:
“I’m excited to share with you a Java application I’ve developed that works on legacy versions of Windows as well as modern versions called JavaGPT. Now you can access ChatGPT and all of its features through an easy to use Java GUI on almost any operating system!”
Among its main characteristics we highlight:
- Chat with real-time responses just like on the ChatGPT website.
- Chat history to browse past chats just like on the website.
- Cancellation of previous chat messages and responses.
- HTML viewer that supports Markdown language syntax.
- Chat titles that you automatically generate based on your context.
- Save chats to a file
- Dark mode and right-click copy, edit and paste functions.
- Support for ChatGPT 4 and all models of ChatGPT 3.5
The most interesting thing is that JavaGPT is only 6 MB in size and is an open source project and anyone can download and view the full code on GitHub.
