sony takes us into space thanks to its satellite star sphere, with which we can take photos 500-600 kilometers from Earth. Presented in the CES 2023, it will turn every person who has the service into an “astronaut photographer”.
Each person who has the service will be able to capture up to 50 images and 30 seconds of video, among 16 possible orbits made by the satellite.
The project was born jointly between Sony, the University of Tokyo and JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Agency. At the moment, the service will only be available for Japan and the United States.
“Our dream is to change the values of individual people, society and the Earth for the better. by allowing anyone to discover ‘spatial perspectives’, notes sony in the Star Sphere portal. “That is why we want as many people as possible to join us. We consider these followers as crew members of the same spacecraft.”
According to the Japanese company, “what makes the Star Sphere satellite so special is that you can ‘operate it yourself’. Therefore, You will be able to take your own space photos and videos with an exclusive camera system, which includes viewing angles never seen before.”
“Become a trailblazer and join a historic initiative to unleash the potential of space.”
But, is it as easy as it reads? We don’t think so.
How does Star Sphere, Sony’s satellite for photos from space, work?
In any case, Star Sphere is a nanosatellite carrying a Sony Full Frame camera with a 28-135mm f/4 lens. Each user will be able to remotely control the camera, choosing photographic parameters such as ISO, aperture or shutter speed as desired.
We insist, it reads very well, but it seems difficult to apply freely.
Sony points out that “When the satellite passes over a terrestrial antenna, users will be able to operate it directly for about five to eight minutes, while checking live images from the real camera on board, allowing them to experience a real-time connection to space.”
“The shot simulator,” continues the Japanese technology company, “will allow you to the intuitive execution of tasks such as the use of the space camera, the configuration of shooting sequences and the reservation of photographic sessions, which will facilitate the planning of shots of the Earth, of the starry skies or of other diverse subjects”.
It will be time to wait to have the first user reviews. It’s a huge project, one more step for Sony in the history of technology.
