Caterham has presented its new model in society. A project that seeks to achieve maximum purity at the wheel. The new Caterham Seven 170 bursts onto the scene, standing out for its light weight and characteristics that make it a unique sports car within the British manufacturer’s range.
Caterham, the popular British sports car manufacturer, is experiencing a turning point. You are finalizing all the details to start your transition process towards fully electric mobility. A transition that will mark the immediate future of the company if we take into account that it deals with a niche market. However, and as the 100% electric Caterham Seven bursts onto the scene, the brand has unveiled its new and most interesting creation. The new Caterham Seven 170.
If the Seven range Caterham’s is to offer an extraordinary power-to-weight ratio. A model that dispenses with everything banal and that is not strictly necessary to offer the purest possible driving experience. However, with the new Seven 170 it goes a step further in terms of lightness and feel. Let’s go into detail.
The light weight of the Caterham Seven 170
The new Seven 170 that has just been introduced by Caterham shows off its featherweight. We are before the Caterham lighter since it marks a weight of only 440 kilograms. This, together with the tuning of the chassis as well as the mechanical section, opens up a whole range of possibilities for enjoyment. However, not only has the weight been lowered, the dimensions of the vehicle have also been modified.
This is the narrowest Seven in the range with only 1,470 mm wide. It is thinner than the model it replaces, the Seven 160. There is no change in the engine. Power comes from a 660 cc three-cylinder engine of Suzuki origin that develops 85 hp and 116 Nm of maximum torque. It is associated with a five-speed manual gearbox and the power is sent to the rear axle. The maximum speed is 169 km / h and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in just over 7 seconds.
Two versions are available. On the one hand we have the Caterham Seven 170S oriented to comfort and in whose equipment we find elements such as a leather upholstery or the climate control. And on the other hand there is the new Caterham Seven 170R. A model focused on track driving. It has racing seats with support harnesses and a firmer suspension. By the way, it is the 170R version that reaches the aforementioned mark of 440 kg in weight.
In terms of price, it would be expected that such a reduction in weight would translate into an increase in the cost of the vehicle due to the use of lightweight materials. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is the access model to the Seven range. It marks a starting price of £ 22,990 (€ 26,840). It is already on sale in Europe in kit format or completely built and ready to go.
