Today, when thinking about buying a new watch, many of us inevitably end up thinking about the possibility of buying a smartwatch. But if we review the most beloved classic models, without a doubt, many of us will end up reviewing the Casio F91W-1.
This version of the watch is one of the most popular in recent decades and if you are reading a site like FayerWayer, it is most likely that at some point in your life you have owned precisely this particular watch.
Its affordable price, dimensions, functionalities and water resistance certificate have kept it to this day as an almost essential model for those who want a reliable digital watch that lasts for many years.
The problem comes with modern times and the concern to acquire a better watch with smart functions that synchronizes with our smartphone. There this classic model could look a little late for its time.
But apparently someone has come up with a very interesting solution.
The retro Casio watch that became a smartwatch
From the most crooked corners of the GitLab platform the user Pegor He gives us the previews of his most recent and crooked project.
It is a Casio F91W-1 watch that works perfectly as a smartwatch or smart watch, with an OLED screen and Bluetooth wireless connection.
All while retaining most of the details and functionality of this classic watch designed and released way back in 1989.
As described on the platform, the subject took practically a whole year to develop his retro-bodied smartwatch.
To achieve this, it was necessary to resort to 3D printing to complete and adapt some parts of the case, while the internal parts of the Casio F91W-1 were replaced by their own hardware.
Having as a central piece for everything a Texas Instruments TI CC2640 board with support for Bluetooth connection. While for the display the good Pegor used an OLED SSD130 panel.
Once the 3D printed parts were integrated with the hardware components, the Kepler F91 watch, as its creator calls it, was officially born.
From the outside it looks exactly like a Casio F91W-1, with its classic design, the resin glass and the fragile plastic case.
But inside is where it keeps all the power that manages to bring this model to the 21st century. Since now the watch can receive notifications from the smartphone, read SMS text messages and even activate when a call is received.
