In the month of August 2022, sales of new cars in Europe have accounted for a total of 739,037 units. A volume of registered cars that, compared to that registered in the same period of time last year, represents a growth of 4%. The Peugeot 208 remains at the top of the table and fights to be the best-selling car.
The European car market has put an end to the negative streak that it had been dragging. In the month of August 2022 the car sales in Europe have reached the 739,037 units. This volume of registered cars, if compared to that registered during the same period of time the previous year, translates into a significant 4% rise.
It is the first growth so far this year. Unfortunately, despite this positive result, the accumulated sales figures continue to report a notable drop. In the period between the months of January and August, new car registrations accumulated 7,143,461 units, 12% less
than in 2021.
SUVs and the B-segment drive growth
during august SUV-type vehicles have represented almost 48% of total registrations of new cars. At the head are the C-SUV and B-SUV segments, which held a market share of 18.9% and 18.3%, respectively. They were ahead of segment B with a share of 17.9%.
The Volkswagen Group led SUV sales representing 28% of the category. Stellantis has lost some ground due to the poor results experienced by its most popular SUVs. On the contrary, Stellantis can boast of having led the subcompact category with the Peugeot 208 as the flagship model.
Electric cars made in China gain prominence
Although the European market closed August positively, electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have lost momentum. Sales of gasoline cars have grown by 6% to 422,659 units while sales of electrified vehicles (BEV and PHEV) only grew by 3.2% with 157,075 registered units.
The 20% of all registered battery electric cars in August were made in China. Registrations of electric cars made in the aforementioned Asian country grew by 78% in August. The Dacia Spring and the MG ZS EV brought together a good part of these registrations.
Volkswagen T-Roc, the best-selling car in Europe in August 2022
What have been the most outstanding models? The ranking of the 10 best-selling cars in Europe during August it presents interesting novelties with respect to previous editions of this list. However, there are no changes in the model that leads the market. For the second consecutive month the Volkswagen T-Roc has taken the victory. A model that can also boast of having been the most popular SUV.
In second position is the Peugeot 208, which is still fighting to regain the lead. And closing the podium, in third place, we have the Dacia Sandero. At the gates of the podium we have the small and casual FIAT 500. The Volkswagen Golf (6th) maintains the trend of previous months and continues to recover positions. It is also worth mentioning the Skoda Octavia (9th), which has broken into the Top 10 with force and has been imposed on such relevant models as the Hyundai Tucson and the Dacia Duster.
