Sales of new cars in Europe have reached 820,913 units during the month of April 2022. A volume of registered cars that, compared to that obtained in the same period of the previous year, represents a decline of 20%. The Dacia Sandero has been one of the most outstanding models.
The European car market is not raising its head. In the month of april 2022 the car sales in Europe accounted for a total of 820,913 units. This volume of registrations, if compared to that obtained in the same period of time last year, translates into a worrying 20% decline. The stock crisis in dealerships due to the global shortage of microchips continues to take its toll on business.
The accumulated data is, logically, negative. And it is that the poor results obtained in recent months are a heavy burden for the automobile sector. In the period between the months of January and April new car registrations accumulated 3,546,456 units, 13% less than in 2021.
The growth of electric cars in Europe stops
To date, electric and plug-in hybrid cars have been cause for optimism despite difficult and unpredictable market conditions in Europe. However, in April, these vehicles recorded a drop of 1.4% compared to the same month last year. The volume fell from 156,371 units in 2021 to 154,219 in 2022. It is the second year-over-year drop since April 2022.
If we focus exclusively on the 100% electric cars we will find that the demand did grow in April. Specifically, 13% to reach 83,000 units. It was the 15% drop in plug-in hybrid models which weighed down the performance of the category in which both technologies are included.
Stellantis was, for the first time, the leader in sales of electric cars in Europe. It reached 16,600 electric vehicle registrations, which represents 20% of all operations. It was imposed on the Volkswagen Group whose electric sales fell by 37% and, therefore, this automobile conglomerate had to settle for second place. In third we have the Koreans from Hyundai-KIA.
Peugeot 208, the best-selling car in Europe in April 2022
What have been the most outstanding models? The ranking of the 10 best-selling cars in Europe in April it presents important novelties in relation to previous editions of this monthly list. The victory went to the Peugeot 208. In second position was the Volkswagen T-Roc, a model that can boast of having been the most popular SUV. And closing the podium, in third place, we have the Dacia Sandero.
The FIAT 500 has been left at the gates of the podium. The Italian city car has had a great performance thanks, in large part, to the volume of registrations harvested by its 100% electric variant. By the way, we must remember that the sales figures for the FIAT model also include those of the Abarth.
One of the most notable absences from the Top 10 is that of the Volkswagen Golf. The best-selling car in Europe in 2021 is now fighting to be at the top of the ranking. In April it was the fourteenth, seeing itself surpassed even by its “little brother”, the Volkswagen Polo.
