The DC film universe has had numerous bumps since its inception. It seems that things could change radically in the future, now that there are new presidents calling the shots for the studio. However, not everyone is happy with the changes they have proposed. And among them is Dwayne Johnson, who points out that he does not fully understand the cancellation of the franchise of Black Adam.
In an interview with Kevin Hart on his show Hart to Hart (via), Dwayne Johnson expressed his feelings about the debut and farewell of his DCEU anti-heroes in 2022. According to the interpreter, the decision not to continue with the franchise is inconsistent yesi consider the strengths of the film:
“[La cancelación de la franquicia Black Adam] it will always be a great mystery, not only for me, but also for our industry. You have the biggest opening of your career. Sure, without China, which could have added $100 or $200 million more. You have a superhero and you want to grow the franchise. You bring back Superman and Henry Cavill, which freaked everyone out. And we created a diverse portfolio of superheroes, where we have men and women of color in Black Adam”.

Given these points, Johnson points out that the film did not benefit from experiencing so many leadership changes in its production company. The actor refers to when James Gunn and Peter Safran sand turned into the new presidents and CEO of DC studios. Following the news, Gunn and Safran announced a complete revamp for the DC Cinematic Universe. Thus, numerous franchise cancellations became official, including Black Adam.
“Black Adam she was caught in the vortex of a new leadership. There were too many changes in leadership. Every time you have a company, a public company, and you have all these leadership changes, you have people coming in who are going to make creative and fiscal decisions that you might not agree with.”
Thus, the also protagonist of Red alert (2021) likened the whole situation to an NFL team acquisition where buyers take a “he’s not my coach, he’s not my quarterback” attitude, adding that “it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve won the Super Bowl or how many rings you have, you will go with someone else.
And while Johnson is right to point out that at $67 million, Black Adam became his best debut as a leading man, the film fell far short of expectations. With a budget of $260 million, the film ended its commercial run with a disappointing $393.3 million. At the time, it was reported that this could have represented losses for Warner of between $50 and $100 million dollars.
