“The data traffic generated by Netflix increased 24 times since May 2018 to 1.2 trillion bits of data processed per second in September, “said SK, and this increase was due to the success of several productions of Netflix from Korea, including Squid Game and DP.
Last year, Netflix filed its own lawsuit on whether it was required to pay SK for the use of the network, arguing that the duty of Netflix It ends with creating content and making it accessible.
But Seoul Central District Court ruled against Netflix, stating that SK is considered to provide “a service provided at cost” and that it is “reasonable” that Netflix is “obliged to give something in exchange for the service.”
Now, a Seoul court said Netflix should “reasonably” give something back to Internet service provider SK for the use of the network, and several South Korean lawmakers have spoken out against content providers that do not pay for the use of the network despite generating explosive traffic.
Netflix said it will review SK Broadband’s claim and will seek dialogue to explore ways to reach an agreement and work with the internet company, to ensure that users are not affected.
The popularity of the hit series Squid Game or The Squid Game Netflix is located in South Korea as the second largest generator of data traffic in the country, after Google YouTube, “but the two are the only ones that do not pay network usage fees, which other content providers, such as Amazon, Apple and Facebook do pay, “SK said.
