Pol Espargaró has achieved his first pole as a Repsol Honda rider. The Catalan rider set the fastest time in the decisive Q2 of the MotoGP British GP qualifying. The # 44 has signed a time of 1: 58.889, a record that has helped him beat Pecco Bagnaia by 22 thousandths. In the front row, next to them, the leader Fabio Quartararo will start after finishing 36 thousandths behind the poleman. Despite his great performance, Jorge Martín has not been able to replicate the performance he had in the two races held in Austria and the Madrilenian will start fourth.
The qualifying session started with a Q1 in which Álex Rins was the big favorite on paper. However, the development of the training session has shown that the Suzuki rider was going to have to clench his teeth to overcome the cut. In fact, # 42 finished second behind an inspired Johann Zarco. The French Pramac Racing driver led the way to Q2 with a time of 1: 59.288. In his first career as a replacement for Maverick Viñales in the official Yamaha team, Briton Cal Crutchlow could not get past the ninth position, so it will come out nineteenth.
The twelve fastest drivers of the weekend faced a Q2 in which everything was going to be decided by a few tenths. In fact, the first eleven drivers have finished separated by 874 thousandths. A scenario in which pole has changed hands in the last moments of the session more than once and in which fortune has fallen on Honda’s side. With a time of 1: 58.889, Pol Espargaró has conquered his first pole with the Repsol colors. Just a sigh behind Pecco Bagnaia finished, while Fabio Quartararo was third. A front row of grill that would have been very different if they hadn’t taken his best lap from Jorge Martín for exceeding the limits of the track at Turn 8.
Thus, Martín has had to settle for the fourth position and will head a second line of output in which Marc Márquez and Aleix Espargaró are also there. Already in the third row appear Jack Miller, a Valentino Rossi not used to fighting in Q2 this season and Johann Zarco, the fastest driver in Q1. For its part, Álex Rins will start tenth with the first of the Suzuki GSX-RR, since the champion Joan Mir will start right next to him. The performance of the two official Suzuki riders has placed Brad Binder in twelfth position.
