In April 2021, it was reported that Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott were teaming up to create a new comedy film. This would be the third time that Seligman and Sennott have collaborated, after the production of the short film Shiva Baby in 2018 and its adaptation into a feature film in 2020. The same director described her film as a high school comedy queer style of “Wet Hot American Summer”, but directed to an audience queer of generation Z. The result has received great praise from the public and critics. This is what you should know about The losers club (Bottoms):
Bottoms: synopsis
PJ and Josie are two lesbian best friends who attend high school. Rockbridge Falls High School. At the beginning of the school year, PJ and Josie witness an argument between their friend Isabel and her boyfriend Jeff at the local fair. When Isabel takes refuge in PJ and Josie’s car, they gently hit Jeff’s knees, who falls to the ground, feigning a serious injury.
Shortly after, a rumor emerges that PJ and Josie were in juvenile detention over the summer and that they got into a physical fight with Jeff. Faced with the threat of expulsion from Principal Meyers, Josie lies, claiming that they only practiced for a feminist “self-defense club.” In the end, they both form such a defense club for female empowerment, but they also secretly look for attractive girls so they can have sex with them and lose their virginity.
Director Emma Seligman told The Wrap on the difficulty of balancing the film’s tone:
“In a lot of movies, tone is very difficult to achieve, especially in a comedy, in terms of how much you care about the characters or how much emotion there should be. From the moment we wrote it until we literally edited it, we tried to figure out what was the limit of the madness we could commit while still having the audience in our hands. “You want to be generous and attentive to your audience members and not throw them all over the place and have them in seven different movies.”
Bottoms: cast and production crew
The losers club represents the second feature film by the Canadian Emma Seligmanwhose acclaimed debut Shiva Baby (2018) brought him numerous recognitions. Seligman and Rachel Sennott (Stuck in the Mall) were in charge of the script, after being inspired by famous comedies such as American Pie (1999), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), Superbad (2007) either Scott Pilgrim vs. the exes of the girl of his dreams (2010).
The film was produced by Brownston Productions, a company chaired by Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Alison Small, in association with Alana Mayo of Orion Productions.
Bottoms is starring Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby) as PJ; Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as Josie; Ruby Cruz (Willow) as Hazel Callahan; Havana Rose (in the storm) as Isabel; Kaia Gerber (American Horror Stories) like Brittany, and Nicholas Galitzine (Badly wounded hearts) like Jeff.
The film has a cast that complements each other perfectly. Seligman and Sennott wrote the film with Ayo Edebiri in mind from the beginning, who was Seligman’s classmate at New York University. Likewise, the writers declared the difficulty in finding their dream cast:
“What would it be like if we brought together an athlete, an influencer, a theater actor and all these people? “He ended up being much more thoughtful and intentional, and a combination of having that inspiration, but also about who was best for the role,” he added to Elle.
