BMW’s sports division is ready to start a new chapter in its history. BMW M has started the tests that will lay the foundation for the development of its future electric cars. Some first tests that are being carried out with a conceptual model to check the operation of the chassis and driving control systems.
BMW M has launched an ambitious and very important transition process to electric mobility. It is time for BMW’s sports division to start a new chapter in its history. A chapter that will star the electric car. Times change and sports firms, as is the case with BMW M, must adapt to the changes that are taking place in the automobile industry.
The German company has officially announced the start of test drives of a fully electric concept vehicle. A model used for driving and chassis control systems that BMW M describes as innovative. Right now a team of developers is testing the hardware and software solutions that will be applied to the future 100% electric BMW M that will hit the market.
The BMW i4 M50 is used as a test base
It has been taken as a starting point to the BMW i4 M50 for the creation of a conceptual model. A purely electrically powered coupe. The bodywork has been modified in characteristic BMW M styling. Wide wheel arches are key to the integration of high-performance front and rear axle designs that have been built specifically for the occasion.
At the front is a body strut concept borrowed from the BMW M3/M4 for particularly high torsional stiffness in highly dynamic driving situations. The arrangement of the radiator units is also based on the configuration developed for current BMW M sports cars.
One of the main keys to this test vehicle is, without a doubt, its electric propulsion system. Employ a M xDrive all-wheel drive system with four electric motors. BMW M ensures that the fact that each wheel is driven by a motor opens up a whole range of possibilities for an infinitely variable, very precise and fast distribution of torque.
M xDrive traction for electric BMW M
All four electric motors are connected to a highly integrated control unit that permanently monitors driving conditions and the driver’s intentions. The ideal power transmission to the road is calculated in a matter of milliseconds based on various values, such as the position of the accelerator pedal.
The interior, although official images have not been published, is equipped with extensive measurement technology to collect very important information that is subsequently analyzed.
