Blizzard Entertainment has announced a new survival game that is part of a new intellectual property. The developer is known for creating several beloved video game franchises including Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, and Overwatch. Microsoft recently bought Activision Blizzard, giving the creator of Xbox ownership of Blizzard’s entire repertoire of popular games.
With a number of much-loved franchises under its belt, Blizzard has been able to build a huge fanbase of gamers over the years. However, the recent controversy over the treatment ActivisionBlizzard gives to its female employees, including an ongoing lawsuit, has caused negative press for the company and its titles. Team-based hero shooter Overwatch hasn’t received a substantial update in months, and it appears that Blizzard is turning all its attention to developing the upcoming sequel, Overwatch 2. Another upcoming title, Diablo IV, will act as a follow-up to the game. action RPG from 2013, Diablo 3. Blizzard delayed Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV in November 2021, which caused a halt in the esteemed developer’s new projects.
Now, Blizzard Entertainment has announced a new survival game that is currently in development at the studio. Intended to be released on PC and consoles, the title will take place in “A Vast Realm of Possibilities, Waiting to be Explored” which is part of a new and original IP. Blizzard is currently recruiting artists, designers, and engineers to help create this new experience, which is apparently still in the early stages of development. Although the first concept art appears to show a fantasy setting, little else is known about the project.
Even if Blizzard hasn’t released an original title since 2016’s Overwatch, the studio co-developed a recent remaster with Vicarious Visions. Diablo 2: Resurrected was released in September 2021, but the updated version of the 2000 classic did not enjoy a smooth launch. Server issues with Diablo 2: Resurrected meant that many users were unable to even play the game, and those who were able to access the revamped RPG experienced many crashes. Character disappearances and server instability were some of the most notable issues, though Blizzard managed to fix them by releasing multiple patches.
Although almost nothing is known about the project, the survival game of Blizzard Entertainment seems to be a unique address for the popular developer. The concept art seems to illustrate a fascinating fantasy world, and the description of the project promises to take players to a mysterious new setting. The survival game is still in the early stages of development, but Blizzard is recruiting new talent to help build the experience.
