Last weekend was long, thanks to the holiday on Monday, March 20. The rest days began with optimism, derived from the good progress that the Mexican baseball team achieved in US territory, within the framework of the World Baseball Classic, in which the most competitive squads in the world have gathered.
The results achieved in the group stage and the passes to the quarterfinals and semifinals gave hope to a very important sector of Mexicans, so much so that in the last game more than 5 million viewers tuned in to the match.
Although baseball is not one of the most deeply rooted sports in our country, the performance achieved generated great expectations with a view to achieving a historic result. This is with good reason, since historically it has been very difficult for us to play face-to-face in a world-class event against the greatest.
In the group stage, the Mexican team managed to beat the United States, Great Britain and Canada. In the quarterfinals, they defeated their counterpart from Puerto Rico, to settle in the semifinals.
On the other hand, Sergio Pérez, a Formula 1 racer behind the wheel of one of the Red Bull team’s single-seaters, continues to make history, becoming one of the greatest athletes in the history of our country, and the best Mexican in professional motorsport. .
His great performance in qualifying allowed him to start in first position on the starting grid of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, a leadership that was confirmed the following day when he crossed the finish line in first place, thus achieving his fifth victory in Formula 1 and making us live an unforgettable Sunday.
Unfortunately, Monday with a flavor of Sunday -derived from the holiday- left us with a bittersweet taste caused by the defeat of the ninth Mexican team against the Japanese squad in the last inning of the semifinal match.
Even so, both results, in baseball and in motorsports, are good news for our country, which must embrace moments like this to bet on sports as the best strategy for building community and building solvent profiles in them.
